Finding Stability Again: A Veteran’s Journey Home

After spending four months in the hospital, I found myself living in a local hotel while waiting for affordable long-term housing. That wasn’t how I imagined this stage of my life. Thankfully, my regimental brothers told me about Homes for Heroes Foundation. I met the criteria, and before long, I was welcomed into the Village.

Because I use a walker, mobility is very important to me. Homes for Heroes provided me with one of their wheelchair accessible units. Having a safe, accessible place to live gave me back something I hadn’t felt in a while, independence and stability.

From the moment I arrived, the staff, Sherri, Beth, and Kris, treated me with kindness and genuine care. I received daily check-ins to make sure everything was going well. They even helped me load and unload my walker from my vehicle when needed. It may sound like small things, but when you’re facing health challenges, those small things matter.

The team also had strong knowledge of the benefits available through Veterans Affairs Canada. More importantly, they connected me with people who understood the system in detail. With their help, I was able to access the full range of benefits I was entitled to, making a real difference in my financial security and peace of mind.

When it was time to move into long-term housing, the staff once again stood beside me. They helped me research options, choose suitable accommodation, and supported my relocation.

My time there was more than just a place to stay. It was a supportive, respectful environment that allowed me to move forward with my retirement in comfort and confidence.

With gratitude,

A Veteran,
